Full day in Brisbane

DSC_0932We lounged around a bit more than usual this morning and had breakfast in bed, mainly because there is no other place for it unless you want to stand in front of the kitchenette and have your coffee. We got ready and walked outside in the mugginess: good thing today was cloudy otherwise it would have been brutally hot. We walked to downtown and on the way stopped DSC_0957at this really cool church: St. John’s Cathedral. The friendly guide greeted us at the door and explained to us that it took them 25 years to complete it because they kept running out of money. Then he also told us they are the only church in the Southern Hemisphere to have a stone ceiling, just like a French cathedral.
After that, we continued our walk and decided we were going to do the ultimate touristy thing: we were going to get a ticket for a tour bus thing that goes around the city and you can hop on/off any time you want. I know, really retirees of us, but we figured it would be a good way to see part of the cities we couldn’t get to on foot.
So we did: we hopped on the bus and went around town for a couple of hours: we went all around town including to Mount Cooth-tha, the highest peak in Brisbane (a whopping 287 m – 941 ft. high). The view of the city is really cool from there. The best part about the bus is that it took us through some beautiful residential neighborhoods that we would never have seen otherwise. The traditional Queenslander’s homes are a raised bungalow style and they reminded us of either Key West or the Caribbean.
DSC_0937We eventually made our way to the Queensland Museum where we learned a bunch of stuff about the local aboriginal people that live in this area. The museum was all about Queensland people, flora and fauna and it was awesome. Once we were done we decided to walk back instead of hopping on the bus again and we were so glad we did.
We walked through the South Bank area of the Brisbane River and saw the local beach: yup they have a made up beach and pool right in the middle of the city. We both wished we had our swimsuits with us. Then we walked some more and stumbled upon what looked like a Christmas bar crawl: a herd of people dressed up in all kinds of Xmas attire walked out of a bar right behind us and walked toward the area we are staying in: we are in the low rent area near Chinatown andDSC_0971 apparently it’s a hopping place at night.
Brisbane was nice, there isn’t a whole lot to see but there is definitely a lot do to as far as eating, drinking and having fun. We went back to the hotel, cooked some dinner and ate it in the company of a possum that climbed on the fence of the little deck we were on (this one wasn’t quite as cute as the ones we saw before).
